Why OEM-Neutral Is a Different Kind of Advice

Most conversations about EV charging infrastructure start with a product. A property owner is approached by, or reaches out to, an equipment manufacturer or their dealer — and the entire conversation that follows is shaped by what that specific company sells. This is a completely reasonable way for a manufacturer to operate. It is also, structurally, not independent advice — and it's worth understanding why the distinction matters before choosing who to trust with an infrastructure decision.

A manufacturer's recommendation is constrained by definition.

However knowledgeable and well-intentioned a manufacturer's sales team is, they can only ever recommend their own product line. If a property's actual needs are better served by a different charger type, a different power rating, or even a phased approach that delays purchase, that's not a recommendation a manufacturer's sales process is built to make.

Independent advisory means the assessment comes first.

The equipment recommendation is unconstrained by any single relationship. This isn't a claim that manufacturers are untrustworthy — it's a structural point about incentives. An advisor with no financial stake in which brand gets chosen is free to recommend the option that actually fits, including “wait, your current setup doesn't yet justify this investment” when that's the honest answer.

Why this is rarer than it sounds.

Many companies describe themselves as “independent” while operating from a limited panel of manufacturer partners, often with commission arrangements attached. That's a legitimate business model, but it's meaningfully different from true whole-market independence — a panel of three still creates an incentive to recommend within that panel, even when a non-partner brand might be the better fit. True neutrality means no commission from any manufacturer, on any recommendation.

What this looks like in practice.

An independent assessment starts with the property — its electrical capacity, guest profile, parking layout — not with a product catalogue. The equipment recommendation comes at the end of that process, not the beginning, and is defensible purely on fit, not on which company is paying for the introduction.
